Katavothres
Katavothres, which means sinks/shallow holes, is one of the many geological attractions of the island, located at a distance of about 2km away from Argostoli, in the cape of Agios Theodoros.
The sinks are cracked - openings in the ground next to the sea,. The water flows continually inland to enter sinkholes below the sea level never to return again. It follows a wide underground path across almost the entire island and connects three points: the sinks, the cave Melissani and a watermill in Karavomilos lake. This geological phenomenon was known many centuries ago but it was only on 1963 when an austrian geologist prooved it by throwing 160 pound of paint into the sinks. Two weeks later the paint was found on the other side of the island and at the Melissani Lake as well. If you get to Lighthouse of Saint Theodore do not miss to visit Katavothres since it is only a few hundred metres far away.
